IS 101 Progress

Hello everyone!

So far, I feel as if I did okay in the first phase of the class. There was an adjustment period with how I manage my time between work/school/personal life. Preparing for the MOS Word exam was pretty straight forward. I did not have any worries about the material on the exam. Taking the practice exams was very useful leading up to test day.

In the future, I would not procrastinate on assignments that are due. Get ahead of the material a few days in advance is possible.

The skill I chose is, 4.11.5: Word header, Footer, and section facts. Learning about the different type of breaks such as, next page, continuous, even page and odd page was pretty cool. It took formatting a document with a lot of different content and images easier to not only visually look at, but made it easier and faster with the various breaks readily available. Before taking this class, I would get frustrated with trying to format pictures and bullets in a document. Learning this skill will definitely be useful moving forward.

I will prepare for MO-110 Word certification exam by doing the practice exams and receiving an 80% or higher. Eating breakfast the day of, and get a good nights rest.

A quote I would like to share is from a best selling book called, Atomic Habits, by James Clear. The quote is, "You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems."

  1. Hi Josie, I like how straightforward your post is, it feels organized without trying too hard, which makes it easy to follow. The way you described your adjustment period is very real, balancing school, work, and life always sounds simple until everything lines up at once. When you said Word felt straightforward, I had the same thought at the beginning. Then I tried fixing one small formatting issue and somehow the entire document shifted like it had its own plans. I remember just staring at the screen thinking I only changed one thing, why did everything else move. That was the moment I realized Word is not difficult, it just requires more attention than I expected. Your goal to avoid procrastination is a good one, even being a little ahead already makes a difference in this class.

I also liked how you talked about headers, footers, and section breaks, because I used to ignore those completely. Then I had to use them and realized they actually control how the whole document behaves. It is interesting how something that seems minor ends up being essential. Your approach to practice exams is smart too, aiming for 80 percent or higher builds consistency before the real test. Also the part about eating breakfast and getting rest, that honestly matters more than people think. I have tried doing practice exams when tired and it does not go well. The quote you included fits nicely, because this class really depends on building good habits.

  2. Hello Josephine, the quote from Atomic Habits is a great one and I've just finished reading that book this year. It really puts everything into perspective and is useful for this semester, especially classes like this. I agree about the practice exams, it was a very useful prep for the Word exam and I'll be using them again and practicing them before the Excel exam. Have a great rest of the semester!

  6. Hi Josephine, the skill you chose is a good one. Headers, footers, and section breaks make such a huge difference when you’re working with longer documents. Before this class, I also used to get frustrated trying to format pictures and bullets, so learning how breaks actually work has been a lifesaver.

  10. Balancing between work, school, and personal life can be a challenge. Glad you adjusted, Josie :-)

Glad to hear you won't be frustrated with trying to format pictures and bullets in a document anymore ^_^

Thank you for introducing me to James Clear, I like it. But I like this quote, "Eating breakfast the day of, and get a good nights rest" better!

  11. Another avid enjoyer of Atomic Habit, amazing book! Getting ahead of schedule is such a hard task especially of the pressure of the due dates are far enough but ultimately would help you be ahead of things in case something happens. I always like doing school work ahead but thinking about doing them is tiring enough.

  12. Balancing work, school, and personal life is honestly tough, so it’s nice that you still felt confident going into the exam. Also that quote at the end was really good it actually fits this class pretty well.

  13. Hi Josephine. Knowing how to insert page breaks is helpful when creating documents because it prevents you from having to insert Enter multiple times. This saves a lot of time when I am writing down the instructions for an assignment.

  14. Hello Josephine. For me procrastinating can be inevitable, I just take it as it is. As long as I finish whatever I need to within the given time frame it's all the same. But I know it's not because sometimes I'm not absorbing the information enough to retain it long term. Page breaks can still be kind of confusing for me. It's like one of the only topics I still am iffy about. I'll check Atomic Habits out, it seems interesting!

  15. Hi Josephine, adjustments can be difficult, but I see multiple people have found the book " Atomic Habits" very fulfilling I may have to read it this summer. I am also a fellow procrastinator as you can see how late I am commenting but better late than never is how I look at it.

  16. Hi Josephine, I liked your reflection on how learning different section breaks made document formatting much easier and more organized.

  17. Hi Josephine, headers, footers, and section breaks are really useful once you learn how to use them properly. The different types of breaks make it a lot easier to organize content. It also makes sense that this would help reduce frustration since Word becomes much more structured and easier to manage.

  18. The best way is to stay up to date and ahead, if everyone's wait until the last minute to do homework, it cuts out of valuable time that you could be doing for yourself or other classes! Nice one Josephine

  19. Hey Josephine, I definitely agree one thing I've learned while in college is procrastination is the biggest hurdle from staying above/below class standards. Being able to implement healthy habits and just doing what needs to be done truly is the key.

  20. Your chosen quote of "You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems." hits hard Josie :') I think a lot of us do so much planning, create so much dreams and goals, but in the end we succumb to procrastination. We give in to the temptation of taking the easy way out and doing the bare minimum. This feels like an eye opener to me and probably a lot of us. If we never change the way we do things and our mindsets, we will always be a victim of our own laziness and incompetence.
