Before The Final Chapter

In Phase 2, I persevered by making sure that I got all of the homework for LabSim in a timely manner. I did the sections little by little. After completing all of the homework in LabSim, then I would work on the practice Exams. If I received a lower than 80% on the Practice Exams, I would redo it the same day aiming to score a higher score. By doing it the same day, the information was fresh in my head, resulting in a better score overall. A6 Spreadsheet Analysis with Trailer was not an easy one, but I was able to push through and get it finished.

In Chapter 5, the section I chose is, 5.7.6: Spill Functions. The spill function in Excel is unique in its functionality because it results in multiple outputs from neighboring cells. The formulas I learned are Unique, and Sort. Unique returns a list of distinct values, without duplicates. The Sort function automatically sorts an array in ascending or descending order.

I have not had the opportunity to utilize what I learned in Phase 2 outside of this class. I work in the restaurant industry, and day-to-day duties do not require me to utilize any of the tools and shortcuts I've learned in Excel.

I am a naturally creative person, so I am not too worried about getting through phase 3 of this class. Therefore, my mindset does not require a shift, but I do need to go through the assignments in LABSIM at a slower pace to make sure that I am scoring 100% on all of the work at the start of it. I did not want to have to redo any work when it comes time to take the Exam. I learned my lesson when getting ready to take MOS-110 (Word exam).

  1. Hi Josephine. I like how planned your approach for working on the practice exams was. Whenever I got a score that was under 80% on a practice exam, I would revisit the topics that I was having the hardest time with. This would help me work on finishing the labs within those practice exams in a faster manner.

  2. Hi Josie, I think your approach to Phase 2 was very disciplined and organized, especially the way you focused on completing LabSim assignments first before moving into the practice exams. Repeating the exams while the material was still fresh was also a smart strategy because it reinforces the concepts immediately instead of waiting until everything starts blending together.

The part about VLOOKUP stood out to me as well because it is one of those Excel functions that can actually save a significant amount of time in real workplace situations. I could see it being useful for quickly locating patient information, schedules, inventory records, or employee data without manually searching through large spreadsheets row by row.

  3. Doing the labs little-by-little > doing them feast-or-famine method :-)

Good job on finishing A6 Spreadsheet Analysis with Trailer and even better job on doing A7 Mail Merge until you produced an error-free set of files even after earning full credit, Josie!

Mastering VLookup, HLookup, and XLookup will make one stand out from the typical Excel users ^_^

  4. Hi Josephine, VLookup is definitely a helpful tool. Excel isn't used in restaurant settings but other skills are needed in order to work in the food industry like staying organizing and being proactive with tasks, which is something that is required to conquer Excel.

  5. Hi Josephine, I hope the semester got easier for you and you were able to get through LABSIM quicker and easier. I found PowerPoint to be a pretty straight-forward section and that helped me catch up on a lot of my work.

  6. Hi Josephine. The process that you use to finish your assignments sounds very useful, I'm sure you did amazing on your exams! Moving around the filters in VLOOKUP was difficult for me as well. Maybe you can try using excel in a personal circumstance like budgeting since it's not something that your job needs, just to test it out.

  7. A fellow creative person that isn't too bothered on taking on Phase 3. Yes, it does not require as much shift and catching up is not too bad. Great topic for the chapter though, if it wasn't picked already, I would've picked it personally! VLOOKUP is very handful when used right. Hope you're getting through Phase 3 smoothly and I hope your creativeness helps you through it!

  8. I like your approach of breaking the LabSim work into smaller sections and then practicing with the exams afterward. Redoing the practice exams the same day is also a smart strategy since the material is still fresh, which helps improve your score.

  9. Hi Josephine. VLOOKUP is definitely a useful and fun function to work with in Excel. So far in this phase i have like all the functions, I am literally amazed by them. However, I will admit is hard to learn for what which one is made for. Also, I like that you set a goal and kept trying on the practice exam to feel ready.

  10. Hello Josephine, taking the labs small chunks at a time is a great idea taking your time helps retain information a lot better than cramming.

  11. Redoing the practice exams the same day is honestly smart because everything is still fresh in your head. Also, spill functions were one of the most interesting Excel features to learn since they make things feel so much faster and cleaner.

  12. Hi Josephine, the spill function truly is a vital component to learn, it makes things so much easier and quicker to handle in a timely manner. Without it I couldn't imagine how tiresome it would be to navigate without it.

  14. Hey Josie! Redoing it on the same day for fresher information is also what I do. We were on the same boat funnily enough, I did it days before then I would do it again minutes before taking the exam. It's a little silly hack but it works! :)

  15. Hey Josephine, I feel like I'm going to have stay out of my comfort zone until I know or feel comfy regarding this function because it sounds scary and I almost forgot about it.

  16. Hey Josie! I also work in the food industry and thought I wouldn't have use for these skills now, but I realized I can make a sheet that calculates what we need to order for our inventory trucks! Usually it takes me 30 minutes-ish to do all the calculations, but I'm hoping this will cut it down to 10-15 minutes! Maybe you could use it for something similar!

  17. Hi Josephine, yeah I learned my lesson too, I had to redo a lot of my LabSims in order to take the first exam so I knew by the next other exams I had to finish all my work first. Good job finishing A6, I agree it was not easy and it was probably the hardest one for me in this course. Hope all goes well with everything you set your mind to!
